I’ve never lived in a home that I’ve owned myself.
My adult existence so far has been contained within rented apartment units, where I can barely afford to pay the rent.
Because I’ve always rented, I’ve had to find ways to decorate that are not permanent, so I can leave the apartment in the same condition as when I moved in. As such, I got pretty accustomed to purchasing and using Command hooks to hang things without making big holes in the walls. For the most part these hooks work great, except for when the indoor air quality does not complement the product. I’ve had several occasions when my air has been too hot or humid for the hooks to stay attached to the walls, and all my decor comes crashing to the ground as a result. For instance, last summer my AC broke down unexpectedly while I was at work. When I returned home I found that it was well over 85 degrees inside, and my thermostat was unable to control the air conditioner as I would expect. I was on the phone with every HVAC company in town, sweating like a pig in the hot indoor air temperatures, when I started hearing crashes and bangs from every direction in the apartment. I went to investigate and had to dodge a painting as it hit the floor right next to me; the heat trapped inside the apartment was great enough to disable the command hook adhesive, and my whole world was crashing down in the out of control summer heat.
