Thank god for basements; sheltering in the storm

There’s nothing worse than suddenly having a wrench thrown into your day.

This happens when you pretty often because I live in a fairly unpredictable environment.

Working on the farm means that I have a lot of unexpected animal problems to deal with. You never know when one of the horses is going to hurt themselves or fall ill. Suddenly, you have to call the vet and wait around all day to resolve the medical emergency before you can get a single thing done. It doesn’t help that we live in a place with an unpredictable climate, as well. Not only do our outdoor air temperatures fluctuate wildly from hot to cold throughout the day… But you never know when you’re going to get a dramatic outburst of severe weather. This is what happened to the other day when a summer storm turned into an emergency. It had been extremely hot and muggy all day long so we were doing our best to finish our outdoor chores so we could get back to AC. That’s when we looked up and noticed the dark clouds rolling in. We actually were encouraged to see the rain storm headed our direction because it would change the outdoor air quality and hopefully decrease the air temperature. We were definitely overheated from working outside and ready for AC at that point. We gladly ran inside to shelter from the storm in AC for a few minutes. However, the storm got worse and we found ourselves hiding in the chilly basement. In that moment, I was so glad that we had a nice cold basement with inherently cool indoor air. I knew our air conditioning system couldn’t be relied upon in case of emergency, but the naturally cool basement could.
